Bert Mandelbaum (Past President)
Bert Mandelbaum graduated from Washington University Medical School in St. Louis in 1980 and completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and fellowship in Sports Medicine from UCLA. He served on the faculty at UCLA from 1986-89 and subsequently joined the Santa Monica Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Group. He presently practices there and serves as the Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program and the Research and Education Foundation.
Academically, he is well published including multiple journal articles and three books. He has received three national awards for Excellence in Research in the Field of Sports Medicine. Since 1995 he has been on the editorial board of the American Journal of Sports Medicine and the Physician and Sports Medicine. He also served 1999-2001 as executive board member for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.
As a team physician B. Mandelbaum has worked with UCLA Athletics (1985-1989) and Pepperdine University (1990-present) and Chivas USA MLS team. He was the Chief Medical Officer for Women’s World Cup Soccer 1999 and 2003, US Soccer Men’s National Teams Physician since 1991, and the assistant Medical Director for Major League Soccer since 1996, and served as USA Team Physician for Soccer World Cups ’94 in the USA and ’98 in France and for World Cup 2002 in Japan and Korea. He serves on the USA Gymnastics Sports Medicine Advisory Board. In 2002 the was appointed to FIFA Medical Assessment and Research Committee (F-MARC). In 2004 he was appointed to FIFA’s Committee on Doping Control. He also serves on the Sports Medical Committee and Medical Officer for the Sydney 2000 and Athens Olympics 2004.
Corporately, B. Mandelbaum serves on advisory boards for Genzyme Biosurgery, Source Medical Systems, ONI Imaging systems, OBI Biotechnology, Scandius and the Global Advisory Board for Slack Orthopaedic Hyperguide.
In addition, he was featured in and helped produce the video Ready, Set and Play. Injury Care and Prevention in Youth Soccer which received the International Medical Film Society’s “Freddie” for categorical excellence in 1997. Since 1997 he has served as contributor to ESPN Sport Zone and during World Cup ’98 wrote a column for Sport Zone entitled In the Training Room. Dr. Mandelbaum also served as the Orthopaedic surgical consultant to the CBS television drama, Chicago Hope 1997-2001.
Lastly and most importantly, he is married to Ruth Sorotzkin MD, a family physician and mother to three great children Rachel age 15, Jordan age 12 and Ava age 8.
